The most prestigious award is the Supreme Award which recognises the overall winner at the awards ceremony.
The Ellerines project for Chantilly Trading 95 (Pty) Ltd consists of a new distribution centre/warehouse, offices and utilities buildings, with high finishes in stature and aesthetics as well as 58 000km² external hardstand.
The 50 000m² warehouse is capable of racking to 14m and consists of a category 1 floor specification in terms of TR34.
The project scope includes both civil and building works for:
A 47 073m² warehouse
9 121m² of warehouse canopies
1 507m² of other buildings such as inbound & outbound offices, crew waiting area, guard house and site entrance
46 885m² of concrete paving and roads
8 651m² of premix / brick paving
In Natal the ground conditions are usually soft rock, however following testing it was discovered there were substantial areas of rock, which hampered progress and required blasting. The bulk earth works saw some 300 000m3 of earth being moved.
The concrete columns were cast to12m in a single lift and the top 2m were cast second to control the high precision and accuracy for the H.D bolts. Due to the unforeseen delay of blasting, the structural steel had to be erected in a very short time of frame and completed to allow for the high tolerance floors to commence.
Once excavations were underway it was also found that there was much underground water, which resulted in some of the construction vehicle sinking up to a meter into the mud/clay. To mitigate this situation three meter deep cut off drains were dug across the site so that the water could flow away and work could proceed between the drains.
The project was audited by the Master Builders Association in March 2012 and a 5 star rating was obtained and further to that it received a Highly Commended Award at the MBA Regional Safety Awards 2012.
A magnificent team effort enabled the technical completion to be achieved and the overall completion of work within the contract period
