WINNER: S'DUMO HOUSING TRUST - MBIZANA 486 RURAL HOUSING PROJECT
The area of development is spread over a wide area of ± 70km, and divided into 4 nodes, located mainly against steep slopes where interim roads had to be built to reach properties without compensation. In spite of challenges, S’Dumo Trust still managed to complete the required development ahead of time and within budget, whilst delivering a well-constructed sub-economic house. S’Dumo Trust used own initiative and utilizes different colour paintwork on walls and tiled roofs. Thus focusing on aesthetical appearance and doing away with a monotonous drab development, which has been well received by the communities.

The development is spread over a wide area. The development is located on numerous rocky areas which made the excavations for foundations difficult. The above challenges were exacerbated by working with a suppressed National budget. However, S’Dumo Trust were once again able to complete the required development ahead of time and within budget, whilst delivering a well-constructed sub-economic house. Sub-economic housing by nature is heavily politicized. As a result S’Dumo Trust had over a lengthy period of time trained and established a very strong “Social Facilitation” division which is headed by S’Dumo Housing partner Mr. Bigboy Zenzele. Dealing with social and political matters quickly and effectively draws focus and distraction away from technical teams, which in turn has a positive effect on concentrating on sound construction methodology.
HIGHLY COMMENDED 2: CROWN HOMES CONSTRUCTION -MPOPHOMENI B, HOWICK
Mpophomeni is conveniently situated, being only 7km from Merrivale, 9km from Howick and only 30 km from Pietermaritzburg’s CBD. Mpophomeni provides the client with an out-of-town lifestyle, with easy access to both PMB and Howick. 100 plots went on sale in August 2010 all with full all-inclusive building packages. The sites are large and flat. The minimum site size is 480 square metres. Crown Homes have currently built and handed over 89 homes with the balance selling out fast.
